According to Toyota's service maintenance intervals, it is only mentioned to inspect the eCVT transaxle fluid at 30, 60, 90, and 120,000 mile intervals. Not once is it mentioned to drain, flush and fill. However, some Toyota Specialists recommend changing the fluid at 60,000 miles. Toyota calls this fluid "Fill For Life" fluid, Toyota's Part Number 00289-ATFWS. "WS" for World Standard.
Fill for Life, a fluid that never has to be changed? Technically speaking, ATF contain a combination of rust preventatives, anti-foaming additives, detergents, dispersants, anti-wear additives, anti-oxidation compounds, surfactants, cold-flow improvers, high temperature thickeners, gasket and seal conditioners and petroleum dyes.
Simply speaking, depending on driving conditions, severe driving, road conditions as well as climate conditions can break down these additives in the fluid. Always remember the three top enemies of transmission units: HEAT, DIRT and LACK OF LUBRICATION!
If the ATF additives have broken down, what is going to help the transmission with heat transfer, keeping dirt in suspension or conditioning of the gears, seals, gaskets and other internal components?
Transmission assemblies have rapidly changed throughout the years, from hydraulically controlled to electronically controlled and now, a continuously variable controlled transmission (CVT).
It is important to gain knowledge on how these CVTs function and how to perform service on them. These units are expensive to replace.
Not all CVTs are the same, they work in the same principle however, Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan and Toyotas require different ATF or CVT fluids.
When servicing a 2004-2008 Toyota Prius Hybrid eCVT ATF exchange, note that there is a socket-head, Allen shaped plug on the bottom of the transaxle, this is the correct one for draining the unit. If you follow a straight line upwards and to the side of the unit, you will find another Allen shaped plug, this is the fill hole.
Fill the unit at this hole with Toyota's Genuine "WS" fluid or its equivalent (if one such exists) until the fluid starts to dribble out of the fill hole (approximately 3.8 qts-3.6L). This indicates a filled unit and you can now re-install the fill plug.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: FAILURE TO USE TOYOTA'S GENUINE "WS" OR ITS EQUIVALENT FLUID MAY CAUSE DETERIORATION IN SHIFT QUALITY, LOCKING UP OF THE TRANSAXLE ACCOMPANIED BY VIBRATION AND ULTIMATELY DAMAGING THE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY.
